Cornwall to London

Tuesday, October 19, 2010
Today was Tom’s last opportunity to show off his stuff driving on the left, with the final test -- driving in central London.  We did spend much of the day in the car and, with the aid of our GPS, directions on the iPod Touch, and our trusty British road atlas, we found our apartment, just a half-block off Kensington Gardens, easily.  As some may know, London has recently instituted a “Congestion Charge” for cars entering the central city and it appears to work.  The volume of traffic funneling into the city decreased appreciably once we crossed into the “Congestion Zone.”  The real sigh of relief, though, came when we returned our rental car, damage free, to the agency just five blocks from our apartment.
Back on foot, we took a walk along the Long Water in Kensington Gardens into Hyde Park.  Then, the sky grew leaden, the wind kicked up, and the umbrellas opened as we walked back through the Gardens, to a small market, and back to our temporary home to dry off and enjoy our happy hour and dinner.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KEVIN!!
